Celine Dion, Oasis and the Comebacks We’re Rooting For

Rihanna returning to music would immediately reorder pop attention, provided the record offers more than an extension of her business empire.

Ocean's long silence has made expectations unreasonable, but his ability to change contemporary R&B still makes a complete new project worth waiting for.

Elliott's records and videos still have no convincing substitute, so a full return would restore pop's strangest major visual thinker.

Dion's return to a major stage after serious illness would be compelling because of the voice, but also because performing itself has become difficult.

Oasis proved the songs remained larger than the feud; the reunion works best when the band plays with enough force to justify reopening the story.

Robyn's precise, emotionally direct pop has no real substitute, and the genre is noticeably better when she is releasing music rather than being referenced.

Björk never returns to repeat an earlier phase; each album changes the visual, technical and musical vocabulary available to everyone following her.

Daft Punk ended cleanly, which makes a reunion unlikely, but their combination of dance music, design and spectacle remains difficult to replace.

The xx's restraint now sounds newly radical after years of crowded production, making a reunion more interesting than simple indie nostalgia.

Apple's long gaps suit the density of her writing; another album would matter because she refuses the ordinary pace and packaging of a career.
