Best Arguments Against Solar Geoengineering
A technology that affects every country cannot be governed like an ordinary national experiment.
1.
Ozone damage
Stratospheric sulfate particles may damage ozone chemistry while changing the amount and quality of sunlight reaching Earth. Cooling one variable does not restore the original atmosphere.
2
2.
Termination shock
If a long-running solar intervention stopped suddenly while greenhouse gases remained high, temperatures could rise very quickly. Societies and ecosystems would have little time to adapt.

3.
It weakens pressure to cut carbon
The promise of cheap cooling may reduce political pressure to cut emissions and transform energy systems. Fossil interests could use geoengineering as an excuse to preserve the cause.

4.
Weaponization
A state with deployment aircraft could threaten to alter climate conditions unilaterally or treat the capability as strategic leverage. Other countries may interpret even research through a security lens.

5.
Attribution conflict
After a flood, drought or failed monsoon, governments may blame the intervention whether or not causation is clear. Attribution disputes could become diplomatic or military crises.

6.
Rainfall could shift
Changing sunlight and atmospheric circulation could alter monsoons and regional rainfall even if global temperature falls. A favorable world average can conceal severe local losses.

7.
No legitimate global government
No global institution has legitimate authority to set the planet’s temperature or distribute regional risk. Consent is impossible when every country is affected but power is unequal.

8.
Harms will be unequal
Some regions may gain while others face drought, crop losses or unfamiliar weather. Compensation would be difficult when models disagree and the intervention’s contribution is contested.

9.
It does not fix ocean acidification
Solar reflection lowers temperature without removing carbon dioxide, so oceans would continue acidifying. Marine ecosystems could suffer even if surface heat temporarily stabilized.
0
10.
The science is immature
Models cannot reproduce every regional cloud, circulation and ecological effect with confidence. A global deployment would therefore expose everyone to an experiment that cannot be fully tested first.
