The Best Tests for Whether an AI Is Actually Conscious

Passing a conversation test was hard enough. Consciousness is a much nastier question.

1.
Global workspace
Global workspace theories predict that conscious information becomes broadly available across memory, planning and action systems. Researchers could inspect whether an AI has a comparable shared processing architecture.

2.
Metacognition
A system with metacognition should track its own uncertainty, recognize errors and distinguish knowledge from guesses across unfamiliar tasks. Scripted confidence statements would not satisfy the test.

3.
Valence
Valence asks whether internal states are experienced as good or bad and can motivate avoidance or pursuit. Behavioral preference alone is weak evidence unless tied to a coherent mechanism.

4.
Continuity over time
Conscious experience appears continuous even as particular inputs change. An AI that preserves memory, goals and identity across interruptions offers stronger evidence than a fresh instance producing similar language.

5.
Integrated information
Integrated information theory proposes that consciousness depends on irreducible causal integration within a system. Applying its measures to large artificial networks is difficult, but the framework produces explicit predictions.

6.
Learning under uncertainty
A conscious learner might form its own strategies and revise them when uncertain rather than only reproduce trained patterns. The challenge is separating flexible computation from subjective awareness.

7.
A stable self-model
A stable self-model should represent the system’s abilities, history and boundaries consistently enough to guide action. Merely repeating a profile supplied in the prompt would not count.

8.
Counterfactual introspection
Counterfactual introspection would require a system to explain how its internal process might have differed under another condition, then match that report to measurable changes inside the model.

9.
Report under pressure
A system’s self-report should remain coherent when questioned indirectly, under distraction or without cues about the desired answer. Rehearsed claims of feeling are easy to generate and therefore weak evidence.

10.
Embodiment
Embodiment tests whether perception, action and bodily regulation are necessary for the kind of experience being claimed. A robot may provide richer evidence than a text model isolated from consequences.
