Strongest Criticisms of the Abundance Movement

Building more is appealing. Deciding what, where and for whom is where the argument starts.

1.
It ducks distribution
More housing or energy can increase total output while ownership and income remain concentrated. Without redistribution, abundance may lower some prices without changing who controls the gains.
3
2.
Supply does not erase inequality
Increasing supply does not automatically make essential goods affordable to people with little income. Housing, healthcare and education still require subsidies, public provision or stronger bargaining power.
3
3.
Environmental review has a purpose
Environmental review protects ecosystems, communities and public participation after a long history of destructive projects. Faster approval must distinguish delay tactics from legitimate scrutiny.

4.
Local democracy matters
Residents have real knowledge and democratic interests in how neighborhoods change. Treating every objection as selfish obstruction can replace slow local government with distant technocratic power.
2
5.
Market power survives
Building more under concentrated ownership can strengthen landlords, utilities or technology platforms. Competition policy and public options remain necessary when a few firms control the new capacity.
2
6.
Public goods need public ownership
Markets underprovide parks, transit, public health and other goods whose benefits cannot be captured fully through prices. Abundance needs capable public institutions, not only deregulated private investment.

7.
Development can displace people
New development can raise land values and displace renters or small businesses before added supply lowers prices. Protection and shared ownership are necessary during the transition.

8.
Growth can become a creed
Growth can become an unquestioned measure of success even when output damages health, community or climate. The movement needs a clearer account of which abundance is actually desirable.
2
9.
The state can be captured
A stronger state can also serve incumbents, security agencies or politically connected firms. Capacity without accountability may execute bad policy more efficiently.
2
10.
Labor is the real bottleneck
Construction goals mean little without electricians, nurses, engineers and other workers to deliver them. Labor shortages, training time and working conditions can constrain supply more than permits.
