Things Schools Must Keep Teaching Because AI Exists
Writing, memory and mental arithmetic look old-fashioned until the machine gives a confident wrong answer.
1.
Mental arithmetic
Stored knowledge gives students the context to notice when an answer is impossible, biased or incomplete. A mind with no internal reference points cannot supervise a machine well.
3
2.
Writing
Writing forces a person to order evidence, discover gaps and decide what they mean. Outsourcing every draft would remove one of education’s best tools for thinking.
2
3.
Logic
Logic helps students test whether conclusions follow from premises and identify contradictions hidden inside fluent prose. Generative systems make that discipline more useful, not obsolete.
2
4.
Source evaluation
Source evaluation separates direct evidence, reporting, opinion and fabrication. Students must inspect authorship and incentives instead of treating a citation-shaped link as proof.

5.
Debate
Debate makes students defend claims, answer objections and change position in public. A chatbot can supply arguments, but it cannot replace the responsibility of owning one.
2
6.
Coding fundamentals
Coding fundamentals explain what software can represent, how errors propagate and where abstraction hides decisions. That understanding matters even when AI writes much of the syntax.
2
7.
History
History shows how institutions, technologies and moral panics changed before, giving students comparisons without pretending the present is identical. AI discourse badly needs that proportion.

8.
Memory
Mental arithmetic builds intuition for scale, proportion and obvious error. Students need not replace calculators, but they should recognize when a generated number makes no sense.

9.
Close reading
Close reading teaches attention to wording, evidence, ambiguity and structure. Those skills are necessary when AI produces smooth summaries that omit the decisive qualification.

10.
The scientific method
The scientific method requires testable claims, controlled observation and revision after evidence. It provides a defense against confident outputs that cannot survive contact with reality.
